Session 1: Poetry and Alan Maley

In this Reading Group session, Alan Maley explored the power of poetry in English Language Teaching and its potential to inspire creativity, reflection, and meaningful engagement with language. Participants read and discussed selected poems, shared their personal interpretations and responses, and reflected on practical ways of bringing poetry into the ELT classroom. The session offered a collaborative space to experience poetry both as readers and as educators.

Session 2: Short Stories

Our second Reading Group session of 2026 brought together readers and educators for an engaging exploration of three short stories, three powerful voices, and one shared conversation.

The session focused on three distinctive works: “The Phantom Palace” by Isabel Allende, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou, and “Woman Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros. Through these texts, participants had the opportunity to consider different literary voices, perspectives, and experiences, while exchanging interpretations and ideas with fellow readers.

The session was led by Barbara Lapornik, Laura Hadwin, Eugenia Carrión Cantón, and Daiana Martinez, who guided the discussion and helped create a welcoming space for thoughtful literary exchange.

Held online on 25 September 2026, the event was organised by LitSIG and IATEFL and was free and open to all, continuing the Reading Group’s aim of bringing people together through literature and conversation.
